For this body of work, McMahon has created seven abstract propositions that go beyond architectural consideration, testing the impenetrable and expansive qualities of space. In her new work McMahon invokes the stage in two ways: as a diagrammatic tool to loosely guide the pictorial framework, and as a metaphor for seeing abstraction as a site of performance. Akin to theatre’s ability to build worlds through intimate encounters, the artist produces buoyant, non-hierarchical arrangements in which entire universes take shape through fragmentary groupings. These spaces are deliberate yet unpredictable, assembled yet unoperated. In the development of this series McMahon has referenced the experimental stage designs of early twentieth century pioneers of abstraction Natalia Goncharova (1881-1962) and Alexandra Exter (1882-1949). Goncharova and Exter each synthesised folk imagery with a futurist vernacular to develop decorative backdrops for various theatrical productions, including Sergei Diaghilev’s avant-garde ballet company Ballets Russes. These experimental sketches inform the musical and spatially ambitious quality of McMahon’s new work. Colours shift subtly then intensely, and shapes reverberate with one another until a labyrinthine field of speculative ladders and coinciding circuits emerge. As alluded to in her titles, McMahon’s abstractions wrangle with the less cogent aspects of human relations. Her use of language is often prepositional and filled with potential; here are modes in which things, feelings, ideas can operate through, in, around, over, and between spaces. By peeking through McMahon’s stage curtains, windows, screens, portals, and doorways, we are guided by authorial devices into a chartered void. As Adorno puts it in a famous passage of Aesthetic Theory, this body of work seeks to “make things of which we do not know what they are”. In an approach that hovers between naming and obscuring, between sensation and understanding, McMahon’s abstractions savour the incomprehensibility of space, and give rise to embodied processes of trajectory of a sentence or thought, half-formed, is so quickly assumed that one enters it before it completes itself. The act of interjecting is a refusal to wait for completion, as though the unfinished can already be recognised, already known in advance. Rushing to conclusion, the sentence is treated as if nothing will be lost or missed in its early closure. What is this habit of arriving early to meaning, of prefilling gaps that weren't empty and building a reply whilst another’s is still under construction? Waiting constitutes attention. Don’t drop the thread. Amid vibrating and rhythmic collisions, each of five artists in ‘#’ produce sites of friction where grids and lines coincide, resist, exceed and reconfigure, expanding ideas of convergence and intersection beyond surface-level mark-making. Representations of cross-hatching and weaving as visual languages, both literal and implied, operate as methods of making and ways of holding works together. Beyond the visual, paralleled vertical and horizontal trajectories of the # symbol, the hash holds a range of meanings; it exists as an organiser or label maker. At its most basic, # is a shorthand for ordering or numbering. In the context of digital and social media, it turns a word or phrase into something searchable; a connector that groups dispersed posts into a shared thread of attention. In '#' interruption is treated as generative. Artists loosen the rhythm of thought to tease hesitation amid exactness, shaped by tensions between industrial precision and hand fabrication. The grid emerges as a recurring framework, wherein artists pose questions of how an artwork remains intact as a distinct whole and how networks are produced within it. Is order discovered or imposed? What is legible and how are things bound and joined? Shadow Crossed The Sky sees McMahon embrace the immediacy of composition, laying bare an indelible human presence that eschews the coldness of pure geometric painting. Interested in subverting the two-dimensionality and graphic quality associated with the surface plane, this new body of work is firmly rooted in the subjectivity of experience and perception. The exhibition spans work produced during the artist’s Samstag Scholarship-sponsored MFA in Rotterdam, NL in 2023, alongside those made since her arrival in Naarm, tracing the artist’s ongoing interest in the architectural and the rhythmic within abstraction. The paintings on show in Shadow Crossed The Sky are often reworked and overpainted–a textural acknowledgement of the structural elements surmising each composition. This process of application alludes to the temporal nature of McMahon’s practice, with each work emerging as a procedural testimony of its own making. Traces of distinctive shapes are concealed, as relief forms find themselves submerged in a lingering, subterranean space. Though rather than search for the hidden, suspended narrative encrypted below, these paintings invite viewers to look for themselves at what is perceptible. Here, McMahon invokes slippery, transgressive forms such as colour gradients while stretching motifs across the boundaries of diptychs to circumvent the insularity that encapsulates formalist abstract painting. Facilitating an internal dialogue that follows its own logic, McMahon’s works are thoroughly palpable, experiential objects that invoke the artist’s studio presence. Oscillating between bold collations to tacit arrangements, Shadow Crossed the Sky features works compositionally weighted by recurrent equivocal shapes. Imbuing each work with a sense of tension and theatre sensitive to the painting’s own conditions, McMahon negates the reverential posturing of post-war minimalist painting. By mining and exposing the mechanics of abstraction, these paintings are characterised by a loosened, highly receptive relationship to form and tonality. 12 Dec 2020 Luke Brennan, Guy Grabowsky, Lucina Lane, Patrick Lundberg, Marlee McMahon Deep, swirling mystical energy pulls you in and you are greeted by a glistening waxy surface. Futurist gestures and rainbow caverns to your left, electrically charged static to your right. These are works you can hear. Paintings lie on a cold industrious floor, cushioned by the weight of their bodies, bruised from their making. An arm and a leg reach out, the other screams ‘Free’ The openness of abstract paintings is evident in the installation. One glides across a large expanse of white, while its partner leads a gentle slope from itself to the surrounding architecture.Fissures along the back wall appear as slits in time, openings to other possible worlds. Here, abstraction becomes a window, what is visible is entirely dependent on one’s frame of mind.Through a process of symbiosis, these photographs lose their objective quality. Not that they ever were objective in the first place, but perhaps this is a more justified equilibrium between subjectivity.As the sun sets, we become weary.
